TRADITION

At Toronto Kenjutsu we believe it is necessary to honour and respect those who came before us in the practice of this ancient art. Our head instructor, Corey Reid, was directly taught by Sugino Yoshio, the legendary martial arts figure whose son, Sugino Yukihiro, now leads the Sugino branch of Katori Shinto Ryu swordsmanship.

GETTING STARTED AT TORONTO KENJUTSU

Getting started at Toronto Kenjutsu is easy enough: show up for class dressed in loose athletic gear, ready to follow instructions and try your best. There are no special skills, tools or talents required to begin training in Katori Shinto Ryu swordsmanship. If you're interested and willing, you can start learning right away.

A cooperative environment encourages learning

That said, do keep in mind that our practice is based on traditional methods handed down from our instructors. It is vital that you take seriously our traditions and customs if you wish to study with us. Lack of respect towards the dojo and the instructors interferes not only with your learning, but the learning of other students, and absolutely will not be tolerated.

WHO CAN PRACTICE?

While a few of the forms are strenuous, it is not necessary for students to attempt exercises they do not feel able to carry off. There is little impact and a high degree of strength or coordination is not required. Katori Shinto Ryu is suitable for all ages and lifestyles.

Katori Shinto Ryu is also not a competitive style. There is no sparring, no competing with your partners. Our practice is supportive and cooperative, and students help each other learn and grow. While there may not be obvious rewards apparent on first glance, those who come to Katori with a sincere desire to learn and improve themselves find its infinite sophistication and thoughtfulness something they can study all their lives.
